The Opportunity

We are set on extending our Prepared Meats reach beyond North America by bringing our products and commitment to sustainability to new international markets. We are focused on partnering with the right customers in key international markets. The Finance Manager, Prepared Meats International and Foreign Animal Disease Preparedness will be responsible for establishing and leading finance activities that help enable global prepared meats competitiveness.  You will be an inaugural member of our new business unit and work closely with dedicated Sales Director, Product Developer, and Business Manager – while receiving support and guidance from Maple Leaf’s established finance leadership.  You will report to the Director of Commercial Finance – Prepared Meats

The successful candidate will be a balance between a seasoned finance professional and an entrepreneur keen on building a new global business unit.  You will work closely with the Vice President and General Manager, Prepared Meats International and the Vice President, FAD (Foreign Animal Disease)  Planning and Preparedness to develop strategy that will optimize returns (meet/exceed target volumes and profit) while setting a clear goals to position our business for success in a quick changing competitive landscape (New Global Trade Agreements/FAD).
 

A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do:

  • Partner with Prepared Meats International and Finance Peers to evaluate new business opportunities and identify actionable insights
  • Partner with the Vice President, ASF Planning and Preparedness to evaluate options to mitigate commercial risks from an ASF outbreak in North America
  • Leverage cost accounting expertise to develop tight view of real marginal cost and profitability (e.g. identify where standards in freight or product costing create noise in evaluating true profit of prospective high-volume export business)
  • Apply a strategic mindset and ability to question the status quo to uncover insight to achieve global cost competitiveness and identify business opportunities in rapidly changing environment
  • Identify and model key sensitivities to provide your guidance in making sound short and long-term business decisions (e.g. foreign exchange, commodities, etc.)
  • Partner with other business units (Pork and Poultry) finance leaders to frame up incremental total company benefit associated with business opportunities (e.g. business opportunities that are profit accretive relative to status quo for the meat segment) and assess potential optimized raw material strategies for long-term business
  • Oversee all weekly and monthly commercial forecasting, reporting and ad-hoc analysis
  • Lead the commercial budget process by managing timelines, articulating key building blocks and gaining alignment on targets
  • Oversee corporate reporting including periodic Board Operating Reports and Quarter over Quarter Analysis

Specific to Foreign Animal Disease Strategies

  • Maintain the unmitigated scenario (multi-million impact) developed with external consultants; refresh at least once/year.  Requires understanding how the model was initially built.  Need to be able to cleanly articulate back to the business what the unmitigated scenario is from which they need to build a response plan (price/volume/meat mix, by phase)
  • For each unmitigated scenario, maintain the latest integrated view of their financial impact
  • Support the team ad hoc in building/testing the mitigation strategies and/or setting forward priorities. Support efforts to understand incremental benefits associated with new “levers” identified
  • Working with the Vice President, ASF Planning and Preparedness, and with feedback from the Executive Steering Team, develop responses to ‘what-if’ questions that could help inform future priority areas

What you will bring:

  • Post-secondary degree in Business or Accounting 
  • 3- 5 years of business finance experience in a CPG or manufacturing environment
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to dive into details as required
  • Strong collaboration skills and business acumen across the value chain (materials sourcing, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, pricing and trade management)
  • Understanding of international and domestic meat commodity markets an asset
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organization and planning skills with strong attention to detail
  • Passion, learning agility and an entrepreneurial spirit
