The Opportunity

 Reporting to the Distribution Warehouse Manager, the Human Resources & Safety Coordinator would provide guidance and ensure compliance to all applicable Saskatchewan Labor Laws, Saskatchewan Occupational Health & Safety and Workers Compensation Board legislation. The Human Resources & Safety Coordinator would be responsible for leading the HR activities at the Midwest DC; including but not limited to Recruitment, Recognition, Training & Development.


A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do: 

  • Provide expertise and counsel to area leaders to achieve organizational safety and HR objectives and outcomes
  • Collaborate with warehouse Management to enhance employee engagement initiatives
  • Oversee workforce planning, leadership development, and diversity & inclusion strategies
  • Develop and advise on talent management practices, absenteeism/attendance, turnover, and terminations
  • Assist employees with short & long-term disability applications, as well as worker’s compensation benefits; liaise with case managers to determine return to work plans
  • Interpret and apply all applicable Maple Leaf and site-specific policies and programs
  • Oversee labor relations & CBA interpretation; led joint labor-management meetings (UFCW Local 248P) as well as JOHS meeting
  • Built rapport with Union executives to strengthen union-management relations
  • design and implement workplace processes and procedures that help protect workers from hazardous work conditions
  • Help supervise or lead investigation of workplace polices and procedure as well as accidents and unsafe working conditions, study possible causes and recommend remedial action
  • Ensure all accidents and near misses are reported and preventative action plans are completed
  • Promotion of the job rotation program via ongoing audits, assessments and providing recommendation for change as appropriate for the employee and the department
  • Assist with the rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries and make sure there is satisfactory return to work
  • Review, document and follow up on all hazard reporting
  • Work with the safety captains and Joint Health and Safety Committee to inspect and test work areas for potential accident and health hazards and implement appropriate control measures (including daily workplace audits, review of safety captains’ audits and participation on the Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • Inspect and test machinery and equipment such as lifting devices, machine shields and scaffolding to ensure they meet appropriate safety regulations
  • Make sure that personal protective equipment, such as dust masks, safety glasses, footwear and safety helmets are being used in workplaces according to regulations and that dangerous materials are correctly stored
  • Ensure that the company is aware of, and complies with, all legislation in relation to the use of its plant, equipment and substances as well as in all workplace activities
  • Act as facilitator in the promotion of safe work behavior program
  • Participation in safety committee meetings as applicable
  • Assist in coordination and documentation of training seminars
  • Assist in the development and communication of Occupational Health and Safety systems
  • Auditing of the On-the-Job Training program, including Job Hazard Analysis and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment and the reduction of lost time due to occupational injury or illness
  • Assist in special projects and duties as required

What you will bring:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in the Human Resources and Health and Safety field
  • Occupational Health and Safety Levels Certified
  • Working knowledge of Saskatchewan Labor Laws and Regulations
  • Knowledge of working in Union environment
  • Demonstrated understanding of Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in Microsoft Office particularly Excel
