A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do: 

  • Administrator of the MLF Corporate Shelf-Life program, reviewing and updating the Company Standard as new data is presented, providing shelf-life program training where required for new employees & providing coaching for others, assessing product shelf-life results and responding to shelf-life change requests from other cross functional teams.
  • Lead and effectively engage with the FSQA teams in our manufacturing facilities to challenge/execute/implement shelf-life improvements based on validated studies of finished goods product performance over time
  • Assess formulated inclusions of microbial inhibitors during shelf-life assessment, to verify that RTE products have sufficient Listeria Protection Coverage throughout the entire shelf life applied plus any safety buffer to meet the MLF requirements and Regulatory requirements.
  • Understand & interpret the output of validated product Challenge Studies and also of predictive pathogen modelling  
  • Execute against the elements of the MLF FSQA 3-year Shelf-Life Strategy
  • Primary FSQA contact to MLF Supply Chain to investigate potential shelf-life improvements that would mitigate the financial risk to the business, attributed to OCD products.
  • Report on positive cost mitigations realized from improvements to shelf-life originating from the list of SKUs deemed highest OCD risk from MLF Supply Chain, including ongoing monthly and annual dollar mitigation summaries.
  • Initiate & follow through shelf-life studies in both pre-defined and newly identified refrigerated and shelf stable WIP, finished goods components and specific product categories, to identify & capture financial benefit to the business
  • Initiate controlled testing of WIP and finished goods, assessing impact to the quality of products from controlled freezing & thawing
  • Order, collect & store product samples which are retained under controlled cold storage, to enable product performance assessments over extended time
  • Lead & facilitate performance panels using a sensory team-approach for products undergoing extended shelf life testing, utilizing MLF employees in the Meadowvale building test kitchen.
  • Collect data from product taste panels and store it in a secure data repository, making it available for use in audits at MLF facilities and for Customer requests to support shelf-life changes
  • Maintain a record of temperatures from the department refrigerator and freezer units, which are utilized for cold storage retention of products during shelf-life study testing at Meadowvale
  • Create shelf-life change ECRs, including consideration for parent/child relationship SKUs & category consistency, and also providing some ECR support for changes initiated at MLF manufacturing facilities
  • Expedite shelf life ECRs routing through timely assessment of supporting data and providing approval or clear description of reasons for rejection

What you will bring:

  • Post-secondary school education (degree or diploma) in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science or related fields
  • Minimum of 5 years of full-time experience working in a food manufacturing facility with emphasis on FSQA experiences
  • Must have some culinary skills and experience to enable safe preparation and handling of foods to be consumed
  • Strong understanding of shelf-life verification processes and best practices
  • Experience working in SAP including RD, QM & trace functions 
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a simple and clear manner with all levels of the organization, including senior leadership
  • Ability to work across the organization to produce desired results both cross-functionally and individually
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to navigate ambiguity
  • Strong skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Strong change management skills, to develop change plans and the ability to manage others through change
  • Demonstrated time management, multi-tasking and priority setting skills.
  • Ability to lead major work-streams relatively independently with proven ability of project management
  • Effective leadership skills with the ability to influence others.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with people professionally.
  • Strong computer software skills including SAP, SharePoint, OneNote, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SAP, Minitab, Power BI.
  • Proven managerial skills including coaching others.
  • Highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with excellent written and verbal communications
  • Ability to travel as per business requirements (~25%) when required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
