The Opportunity

 The primary role of the Breeder Service Specialist is to represent the Hatchery, while working with the Hatching Egg Industry (Hatching Egg Producer and Breeder Grower), to maintain hatching egg quality.  The Flock Supervisor will provide technical service and expertise, maintain open lines of communication, and report findings to the Hatchery.

A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do: 

  • Work closely with the hatchery, hatching egg producers/BG and veterinarians to maintain flock health, production and hatchability.
  • Work with the producer to maintain hatching egg quality
  • Work with the producer to enhance on farm programs – biosecurity, rodent control, pathogen reduction, barn sanitation and disinfection.
  • Work with the hatchery and hatching egg producers to resolve hatchability problems.
  • Maintain contact with primary breeder companies and other industry organizations to communicate flock management recommendations based on breed and product advancements.
  • Provide Flock Management recommendations regarding brooding, feeding, bodyweight, fleshing, disease prevention, egg production/quality, fertility and flock health
  • Collect production data and reporting of information pertaining to overall flock performance.
  • Process required transactions in SAP.
  • Using CHEQ support, provide Environmental Management recommendations regarding ventilation, water treatment, lighting, litter management and pest control
  • Monitor bird welfare and overall flock condition
  • Communicate with production coordinator at hatchery regarding flock performance for egg supply
  • Communicate as required with the Animal Health Lab for bird health and quality programs
  • Communicate, monitor and report findings to hatchery for any health or flock condition challenges in assigned flocks
  • Responsible to communicate with company veterinarian on flock health issues and programs.
  • Communicate and participate in team meetings to review flock results and provide feedback towards the improvement of the Breeder Service Program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Deliver and administer the vaccination program with the assistance of the producer / grower
  • Provide solutions to BG/HEP to optimize overall flock health and performance
  • Schedule and audit crew vaccinations, Track vaccine usage, etc. up to date
  • Collect and submit samples for OHSFP, serology and quality assurance monitoring as directed by the hatchery and the Policy
  • Adhere to visitation schedule as outlined in hatchery program, including day old placement
  • Assist with completing and submitting any paperwork for OBHECC, primary breeder and OHSFP requirements.
  • Review & complete data entry for all producer flock records for placement, production, mortality to track and analyze flock production data to look for trends, changes, possible challenges and opportunities for improvement.

What you will bring:

  • Knowledge of Ontario Hatchery & Supply Flock Policy, OBHECC regulations and CHEQ program
  • Experience working in poultry/broiler breeder operations preferred.
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in agriculture/animal science an asset.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma required.
  • Working with the hatching egg producer/BG, hatchery and veterinarians, the goal is to meet information flow and analysis requirements and provide a quick and appropriate response to any problems or challenges that may occur.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Good writing skills. 
  • Knowledge of computer programs – SAP, Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and have flexible hours -  outside of normal working hours.
  • Geographically located in the South Western Ontario region.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Willingness to learn and participate in development programs.
  • Willingness to work with the rest of the Breeder Service Team to provide support and information as required.
