The Opportunity

The Corporate Secretary and Legal team at Maple Leaf Foods provide strategic business and legal advice to our businesses and enabling functions.  Reporting to the Director, Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property, this role will support and assist the Legal and Corporate Secretary Group in a variety of areas, focusing on providing specialized support relating to corporate and IP matters, corporate records management and filings. 

A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do:

  • Maintain corporate records
  • Prepare and submit corporate filings and entity registrations for MLF and its subsidiaries
  • Provide administrative support for documents and activities related to corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, formations and divestitures
  • Minute-book review and maintenance
  • Trademark administration and file management
  • Global subsidiary entity management
  • Invoice processing and tracking legal budget
  • Utilize current systems, including GEMS, WebTMS and SAP, as needed to perform tasks related to the position
  • Performance of clerical and administrative tasks related to the position
  • Working with other members of the legal and corporate secretary team on special projects and initiatives as assigned

What you will bring:

  • Licensed Paralegal or Law Clerk (Diploma and/or Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario Certificate)
  • Direct work experience in a Law Clerk or Paralegal capacity, preferably in the areas of business/corporate commercial law (preferred) and/or IP law
  • Experience completing a broad range of corporate filings and maintaining corporate minute books and corporate databases
  • Positive attitude with superior verbal and written communication, organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to prioritize high volumes of work and to respond to constantly shifting priorities
  • Proactive follow-up on outstanding matters
  • Strong aptitude for detail
  • Decisive and able to work with minimal direction/supervision
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Positive team player
  • Previous experience in the corporate secretariat department of a publicly traded company is an asset
  • Familiarity with applicable provincial and federal laws, such as the Canada Business Corporations Act and Regulations, Canada Trademarks Act and Regulations and/or provincial corporate legislation is an asset
