The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Sustainability Manager, the Senior Sustainability Specialist will lead multiple initiatives that support various waste elimination and sustainability strategies to help reduce Maple Leaf’s environmental footprint. The support, collaboration, and leadership of this individual, both at the plant and corporate level, will be key to drive results in this role. The Senior Sustainability Specialist also works cross functionally with groups to review process performance and identify sustainability opportunities. This role will be key to help achieve our goal “To Be the Most Sustainable Protein Company on Earth”.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:
- Assemble and lead a cross functional Sustainability team existing of both hourly and salaried employees
- Benchmark various food loss waste throughout the plant and identify significant opportunities for reduction. Work closely with “Process Optimization Specialists” to achieve Continuous Improvement goals.
- Develop, implement, and manage programs to improve the plant’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance
- Collaborate with employees, management, suppliers, and external partners to foster awareness and promote sustainable actions.
- Support the FSQA team for Food Safety Incident Reports with root cause analysis
- Investigate practical, cost-effective, and innovative plant sustainability solutions
- Create a sustainability culture at the plant through education and training (Lunch and Learns)
- Support Research, Development and Technology dept, 6 sigma team and Industrial Engineering for any project work needing plant expertise to obtain Continuous Improvement goals
- Become the plants Volunteer Champion to help schedule and lead volunteering opportunities at both plant level and throughout the community
- Support all corporate sustainability initiatives and programs including “Feed Opportunity - The Centre for Food Security”
What You’ll Bring:
- University Degree/College Diploma, or equivalent work experience of at least 5 years.
- Experience leading on-the-floor improvement initiatives.
- Proven track record of providing and historizing detailed daily from-the-floor deficiency reports for driving process improvements.
- A passion for sustainability to help reduce our carbon footprint
- Team player with effective leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical and planning abilities combined with practical business sense.
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office suite).
- Knowledge and experience within the Food Industry is critical.
