The Opportunity:
As a member of the VP Controller’s team, the Director, Assistant Controller works closely with the VP to provide leadership and technical oversight to the Reporting and Accounting groups at Canada Packers, a Canadian public company expected to be spun out of Maple Leaf Foods Inc. This includes the responsibility for producing all external consolidated financial statements, Management Discussion and Analysis, and shared responsibility with the Business Finance lead for internal monthly management reporting, as well as responsibility for the month end close process, and associated controls.

A snapshot of some of the exciting things you will lead and do:
- Lead a cross-divisional Accounting and Reporting group
- Supervise and lead the consolidations and technical accounting teams
- Own initial drafts of all external Consolidated Financial Statements
- Work collaboratively with Executive Team, Investor Relations, Treasury and the Business Finance group to complete the MD&A and Press Releases
- Collaborate in drafting and review of annual documents
- Liaise with external audit
- Supervise general ledger account reconciliations in collaboration with Business Finance lead
- Support the enforcement of closing timelines, and recommend improvements to processes
- Responsible for the consolidation, ledger and account reconciliation systems
- Technical expert on IFRS, and key resource on technical accounting issues
- Supervise and lead pension accounting, including pension plan financial statements
- Co-lead ESG design, implementation and reporting as required by laws, standards or directed by executive leadership
- Provide support for the VP, and coverage in his absence
- Lead development of accounting policies and procedures, including implementation of new pronouncements
- Working collaboratively with Internal audit to ensure all internal controls are in place and functioning
- Account and forecast all short term and longterm incentive compensation, including share-based compensation
- Budget and forecast balance sheet items in collaboration with Business Finance and treasury
- Consolidate budget and forecasts
- Manage governance over reporting system
- Embrace and encourage automation in all areas, including RPA and AI as appropriate
- Special projects as required

What you will bring:
- A diverse perspective that complements the skills, strengths and opportunities of the team
- Insatiable curiosity and relentless desire to improve process and product
- CPA designation with 7+ years of experience in an accounting firm.
- Experience with the preparation and analysis of public company financial statements and notes (Food/Consumer Packaged Goods industry experience an asset)
- Experience with writing and reviewing public company MD&A and financial statements
- Technical knowledge of IFRS
- Technical knowledge of pension accounting would be an asset
- Previous experience managing a professional team
- Previous experience in producing internal management reports
- Previous experience in reviewing and analyzing account reconciliations
- SAP experience is an asset
- Proven leadership and coaching skills
- PC skills – Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
- Understanding of financial control environments
- Previous experience managing external and internal auditors
- Detail oriented and persistent
- Self-starting individual who can work well independently
- High level of integrity and strong sense of personal ownership and accountability
- Adaptive to fast-changing environment – works well under pressure
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Understand the importance of accuracy and timeliness
- Strong communication & interpersonal skills, willingness to initiate conversations with operations, including communication with senior executives
- Enthusiastic attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to fit well into a team
