Registered Veterinary Technologist

The Opportunity:

This position is responsible for supporting all activities of poultry veterinary practice, including those for which the designation Registered Veterinary Technologist is required, such as the dispensing of veterinary drugs and support further activities on poultry veterinary practice, No weekend work is expected for this position. 

Additionally, this position is responsible for supporting activities of the Maple Leaf Ag-Ops Division as a whole doing such tasks as submission of samples, communication with diagnostic laboratories, manage vaccine inventory and PO generation in SAP system, coordination of vaccination procedures, bleedings, and coordination between different departments and producers. Support on projects between departments (monitoring condemns at plant, collect bloods / samples from farms, etc.).

The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of experience in the food animal industry, managing samples, shipping, and organizing results in a timely manner.

Extensive experience in poultry production (>5 years) might be considered in lieu of being a Registered Veterinary Technologist.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:

  • Dispensing of antimicrobials and other veterinary medications in accordance with ABVMA requirements
  • Complete and maintain veterinary records in accordance with ABVMA requirements
  • Support veterinary practice compliance with ABVMA requirements
  • Perform in-house projects related with poultry diagnostic and monitoring samples
  • Prepare and coordinate sampling schedule for pullet, broiler breeder, and broiler farms
  • Biological Safety Officer for poultry laboratory
  • Execution of laboratory testing and reporting of results within Laboratory Information Management System
  • Oversight of Quality Management protocols
  • Assist the Veterinarian with necropsies.
  • Disposal of biological waste
  • Cleaning of biological hazard area and materials required
  • Maintain in/out records for samples and reports
  • Shipping of samples, creation of laboratory submissions, forwarding of reports
  • Aseptic preparation of sample kits
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and perform SAP transactions including but not limited to purchase requests, sales orders, receiving, and shipping as directed
  • Maintain inventory of medications and other supplies
  • Prepare and maintain standard operating procedures for poultry veterinary practice and laboratory including biological safety and associated training records
  • Maintain equipment maintenance logs and daily checks
  • Support prescription preparation
  • Scheduling of farm visits
  • Support Q.A. programs and biosecurity protocols
  • Assistance with data entry/analysis including but not limited to: pathogen results, performance results from on-farm trials, results of routine sampling
  • Sampling and environmental monitoring procedures in poultry barns if required
  • Assistance with training and/or on-site verification of sampling procedures when required
  • Typing/compiling meeting or visit notes for sharing with broader team
  • Other tasks as required

What You’ll Bring:

  • Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Registered Veterinary Technologist in the province of Alberta
  • One to two years’ experience, preferably in food animal industry
  • Extensive experience in poultry production (>5 years) might be considered in lieu of being a Registered Veterinary Technologist. 

Required Skills & Knowledge:

  • Veterinary practice experience
  • Lab experience especially in the area of Microbiology
  • Ability to analyze results and create recommendations and opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Computer Skills: skilled user of Microsoft office applications and Excel graphing applications
