Investor Relations Director

 The Opportunity:

The Director of Investor Relations role provides an unparalleled opportunity to work with senior leaders across the organization, as well as critical stakeholders in the capital markets. The Director will work alongside the VP, IR to develop a best-in-class IR program.  

Utilizing their extensive Maple Leaf network, experience and detailed understanding of the business and its key performance drivers, primary accountabilities will include acting as a key liaison with business leaders to ensure IR is always up-to-date on business performance, future outlook and opportunities, and issues as they arise, as well as developing IR materials and communication plans that appropriately reflect these areas.

As a key member of the IR and Finance management team, the Director, Investor Relations will work with key executives, including the CEO, CFO, and COO.

Responsibilities include developing the company’s key messages and narrative during quarter ends, and for other events such as investor presentations, conferences, and meetings. The Director will apply their exceptional analytical skills to understand and explain complex financial issues. Working collaboratively with a wide range of internal stakeholders, they will lead a robust process with the VP, IR to develop a clear and compelling story for the investment community.

Some of the business-critical things you will be responsible for:

  • Working with operating units to ensure IR and senior leadership has a full understanding of results and drivers to produce analysis that appropriately explains results to external stakeholders.
  • Preparing quarterly messaging materials (investor deck, conference call script, Q&A).
  • Building relationships with shareholders and the investment community, including research analysts.
  • Bringing a deep understanding of the company’s financial and operational matters, as well as developing a strong knowledge of the industry, current trends, and competitive positioning.
  • Effectively implementing communication strategies to articulate the value proposition of Maple Leaf to investors, research analysts and other stakeholders.
  • Driving continuous improvement in external disclosure and quarter-end processes.
  • Establishing strong business relationships with all business units and with the senior leadership team; and
  • Understanding how capital markets operate and evaluate potential investment opportunities and educating business leaders on how the company is perceived and valued by the investment community, with a view to providing input to company strategy and implementation.

The successful candidate will have established success in bringing insightful thinking, fresh ideas, and clear and concise communication.  The role requires a data-driven, solutions-oriented individual with an ability to understand business trends, broader industry dynamics and synthesize information from multiple sources to build compelling narratives. This will be a commercially and financially-savvy individual, with the ability to identify the key business issues at hand and who will challenge and question with an unwillingness to accept the status quo. 

Results orientation
The successful candidate must be decisive and action-oriented, with a record of driving high performance and strong results. This will have been demonstrated through the ability to successfully manage multiple priorities while delivering to high standards within tight time constraints. Additionally, this person will actively seek and implement innovative and better ways of achieving the desired business outcome, understanding that positive outcomes are most desired (rather than a dogmatic process orientation). 

Collaboration and influencing skills
The successful candidate must have the interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with senior executives across the organization. In addition, a collaborative and positive attitude is essential to help best position Maple Leaf with the investment community. This person should work effectively in cross-functional teams and be comfortable they can develop regular interaction and strong working relationships with seasoned investment professionals external to the organization. 

Required Skills & Experience:
  • In-depth knowledge of the food or consumer products industry in Canada
  • Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills
  • Strong business insight and financial acumen
  • Aligned with Maple Leaf Food’s Leadership Values
  • MBA, CFA and/or CPA designation
